2009: Pussy Pink Afghan

Reconstructed blog post - for hooking posterity sake

The Name (BST*)

Pussy Pink Afghan

This is the first second thing I made once I resumed crocheting again. At about this time, I was going through another round of recovery – third?  fourth? Actually, the picture was from an acquaintance’s – discovering lately, my definition has changed – wedding shower party. I have always felt maladjusted, and had discovered my crochet, as a means of being present, but not really seen. It’s still my first defense. Sorry, I was reminiscing.

Aaugh!

The name comes from Tania’s desire to include “Pussy Pink” into her afghan. Having no familiarity with “pussies or pussys,” I incorporated a range. As my luck would have it, the hottest pink was the one she had meant, the same color that I happened to – if I remember correctly – run out of, the manufacturer had discontinued.

The Afghan

Dimensions: approximately 4 x 6 feet

This afghan was created for my friend Tania Noval, who had requested something in, or with, “pussy pink.” Having no familiarity with pussies, much less their color, my interpretation was something along the lines of Hot Pink.

At this time, I had just resumed crocheting as a means to pass the time of a four-hour commute to, and from, work.

The Yarn

Unknown Wal-mart Pinks & White

Colors: Assorted Pinks & White; Content: Assorted Man-made fibers; Weight: 4, Worsted

I had biked over to the neighborhood Walmart, bought a plastic hook – because they looked cool – and some assorted acrylics in pink, plus white.

I loved this song when I discovered it; I still do. The pink yarn used in this scarf was the inspiration for this name.

The Scarf

Dimensions: 82 x 6 inches

Worked brown: purl, knit; pink: knit purl, alternating colors every two passes. Surprisingly, I ended up with a different feature color on either side.

Brokenhearted

Brokenhearted

The Name

Brokenhearted by K. D. Lang

I have been told – twice now – that this cowl looks very christmassy. While I have to admit that it does, I named it Brokenhearted because that is how I was feeling during the knit.

Brokenhearted

The Cowl

Dimensions: 11-inch diameter x 20-inch height

Ever since this cold weather set in, I have needed more protection while crocheting/knitting so I decided to make a longer cowl that I could pull up over my head.

Knit in garter.

Teddy Bear is left over from Under The Bridge; Homespun is left over from Poison Arrow; and Unknown Grey is exactly that.

Another tush that needs some cush!

The Tush Cush

Dimensions: 15 inches square

This time I created in double crochet for faster turnaround. It still took just as long as the single crochet, only because I had to recall to memory my Solid Granny Square pattern. Maybe I better write it down before dementia sets in.

Yarn

Caron Simply Soft
Color: Black; Content: 100% Acrylic; Weight: 4, Worsted

Red Heart Super Saver
Color: Yellow*; Content: 100% Acrylic; Weight: 4, Worsted

Those are the only two I could come close to guessing. All other yarns – red, orange, green-purple multicolor, red-blue multicolor, tan, pink, brown – were deemed by me, as worsted and man-made fibers, except the gold lace crocheted together with the black Caron.

I took the easiest, most accommodating opportunity with this name. With Masquerade cueing to end, my mind free-associated the design of th

e scarf with the a song i knew by the same group.

The Scarf

Dimensions: 80 x 3 inches

Cast on 14 double-strand stitches and worked a 1×1 rib to desired length. The scarf will be donated to charity via the El Segundo Slipt Stitchers knitting guild.

 The Yarn

Unlabeled yarn balls ‘n’ scraps acquired from either CSNanaCat or the El Segundo Slipt Stitchers knitting guild.

Masquerade

The Name

Masquerade by Berlin

A random feeling…I had a mental association between the deep pink and olive green of this scarf – so dark the green at one point where it becomes wood brown – leading me to a masquerade ball in New Orleans where the wisteria hangs from the boughs of big indigenous trees.

The Scarf

Dimensions: 58 x 3 inches

Knit-cast-on 10 stitches and worked in garter to desired length, double-stranded where necessary to maintain yarn weight. Scarf to be donated to charity via the El Segundo Slipt Stitchers.

The Yarn

Unlabeled balls of yarn obtained from either CSNanaCat or the El Segundo Slipt Stitchers knitting guild.
